GTA 6: Everything We Know (2026) — Release Date, Map, Characters & Price

GTA 6 official cover art featuring Jason and Lucia in Vice City

The short version

Grand Theft Auto VI launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. It returns to Vice City inside the new state of Leonida, stars the series' first dual leads — Jason and Lucia — and ships in two editions: Standard at $79.99 and Ultimate at $99.99. Here's everything Rockstar has actually confirmed, with the rumors kept clearly separate.

No game in history has been picked apart frame by frame quite like this one. Between two official trailers, a batch of Rockstar screenshots, and the recent pre-order reveal, we finally have a solid picture of what Grand Theft Auto VI actually is — not the leak-channel version, the real one.

This is our living rundown of every confirmed detail. We update it whenever Rockstar drops something new, and we're careful to mark the difference between confirmed facts and rumored ones. Bookmark it; you'll want it as launch closes in.

Release date & platforms

After two delays, the date is locked. GTA 6 releases Thursday, November 19, 2026, and Rockstar has reaffirmed it more than once — so barring something dramatic, that's the day.

At launch it's console-only: PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. There's no last-gen version (PS4 and Xbox One can't handle it) and, notably, no Nintendo Switch 2 release. The game goes live at midnight local time in each region, so players in New Zealand technically touch it first.

What about PC? Rockstar hasn't given a date. If history is any guide — GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 both landed on PC roughly 12–18 months after console — a late 2027 or 2028 PC release is the working expectation. Treat that as informed speculation, not a promise.

Price, editions & pre-orders

Pre-orders opened June 25, 2026. There are two editions, and the gap between them is bigger than just cosmetics this time:

Edition Price What you get
Standard $79.99 The complete base game — full single-player campaign plus access to the new GTA Online.
Ultimate $99.99 Everything in Standard plus exclusive vehicles, weapons, outfits, two vehicle mod shops, and story-mode bonus content that unlocks as you play.

Anyone who buys before November 20, 2026 gets the Vintage Vice City Pack as a pre-order bonus, on either edition. Digital buyers also get one month of GTA+ membership. One thing worth knowing: the physical "disc" edition isn't really a disc — the box contains a download code, not a Blu-ray. Preload begins November 12, a week before launch.

Heads up: the Ultimate Edition locks a handful of single-player businesses and cosmetic shops behind the higher price, which stirred up some controversy in the community. Worth factoring in if you're deciding between the two.

The map: Leonida & Vice City

GTA 6 returns to Vice City — Rockstar's take on Miami — for the first time since the 2002 classic. But this time the city is just one piece of a much bigger whole: the fictional state of Leonida, a stand-in for Florida.

Rockstar has officially named six regions:

  • Vice City — the neon-soaked urban core: Art Deco beachfronts, downtown high-rises, canals and nightlife.
  • Leonida Keys — an island chain inspired by the Florida Keys, linked by long bridges over turquoise water.
  • Grassrivers — wetlands and swampland (think Everglades).
  • Mount Kalaga — a national-park highland region.
  • Port Gellhorn — an industrial port area.
  • Ambrosia — a further confirmed region Rockstar has named but shown little of.

How big is it? Rockstar hasn't put an official number on it, but community analysis of the trailers and screenshots estimates the map is roughly 1.5 to 2 times the size of GTA V's Los Santos and Blaine County combined. All that water also means boats look far more central to getting around than in any previous GTA. (Map-size figures are estimates, not official.)

"Grand Theft Auto VI heads to the state of Leonida, home to the neon-soaked streets of Vice City and beyond." — Rockstar Games

Characters & story

For the first time in a mainline GTA, you play two protagonists — and Rockstar frames their relationship as a modern Bonnie and Clyde.

Lucia Caminos is the series' first playable female lead in the main story. Her father taught her to fight young; a life spent protecting her family landed her in Leonida Penitentiary. She enters the game fresh out of prison, determined to make only smart moves — with Jason as her way out.

Jason Duval grew up around criminals, did a stint in the Army to escape that life, and ended up right back in it — running errands for the local drug trade in the Leonida Keys. Rockstar's bio sums him up neatly: a guy who wants an easy life, but things just keep getting harder.

As in GTA V, you'll be able to switch between the two for most of the game, outside key story beats. Around them is a deep supporting cast — Jason's landlord-slash-employer Brian Heder, music mogul Boobie Ike, smuggler Raul Bautista, the rap duo Real Dimez, and more. Rockstar's one-line setup: "Jason and Lucia have always known the deck is stacked against them."

Gameplay & tech

GTA 6 runs on Rockstar's next-gen engine (RAGE 9), and the leap from Red Dead Redemption 2 is meant to be enormous. From official material and credible reporting, expect:

  • Denser, smarter NPCs — characters with daily routines who react to your clothing, your vehicle, and the chaos around them.
  • Real water and weather — dynamic ocean behavior, currents and weather that actually affect the world.
  • Hundreds of interiors — leaks point to 700+ enterable buildings, from shops to clubs. (Rumored, not confirmed.)

The throughline in everything Rockstar has shown is density — a world built to feel lived-in rather than just large.

GTA Online

A new version of GTA Online is confirmed and comes bundled with the base game, though Rockstar is keeping details under wraps. It's widely expected to arrive shortly after the single-player campaign rather than exactly at launch. Court documents have pointed to a 32-player mode, but treat specifics as unconfirmed until Rockstar says so directly.
