GTA 6 Finally Showed Real Gameplay — Here's Everything in the Netflix "Extended Look"

GTA 6 Extended Look gameplay showing Jason and Lucia in Vice City

The short version

After more than a year of silence, Rockstar finally showed real GTA 6 gameplay on August 27 — a roughly 27-minute presentation called "Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look," which premiered on Netflix before going free on YouTube. It was captured entirely on a base PS5, and it gave us our first real feel for how the game actually plays. Here's everything that stood out.

This is the moment the GTA community has been waiting on for years. Two trailers in, we'd seen the vibe, the characters, and the world — but almost no actual gameplay. That changed in a big way. Rockstar teamed up with Netflix for a first-of-its-kind reveal, dropping nearly half an hour of footage that finally answers the question everyone's been asking: what does GTA 6 actually play like?

I watched it so I could break down the parts that matter most. Here's what's new, what's returning, and what caught my eye — in plain English.

What the Extended Look actually was

First, the facts. "An Extended Look" ran about 26–27 minutes and premiered on Netflix on August 27, with a six-hour exclusive window before it hit Rockstar's YouTube channel and the official GTA 6 site for free. Rockstar made a point of saying it was all captured on a regular, base PS5 — not a high-end PC, not a PS5 Pro. That's their way of telling you this is what the game genuinely looks like on the hardware most people own.

One honest note: a good chunk of those 27 minutes leans on cinematics and quick montages rather than long stretches of raw, controller-in-hand play. That's a normal Rockstar choice for a first showing — they build early reveals around mood and characters and save deep gameplay for later. It doesn't say anything bad about the game; it's just worth knowing what you're watching.

Combat feels heavier — and Dead Eye is back

The shooting looks like a real step up. Jason and Lucia take cover, grab weapons from the environment, and fight through several shootouts, with the familiar weapon wheel returning. The big surprise: a slow-motion aiming ability that looks a lot like Dead Eye from Red Dead Redemption 2 — time slows and you can pick your shots. GTA 5 had a lighter version of this for Michael, but this feels much closer to the Red Dead version.

There's also a limit on how many weapons you can carry now, which is a shift away from the classic GTA "carry an entire armory" approach and toward something more grounded. Vehicle combat looked great too — shooting from moving cars, blowing out tires, and escaping police at speed.

The takeaway wasn't the gunfights or car chases — it was just how much there is to do in between them.

The new police & wanted system

This is one of the coolest reveals. The six-star wanted system returns, but it's smarter now. During a store robbery, players spotted a row of new icons under the star rating, each showing how the police are tracking you:

  • A camera icon — the store's security camera is filming you.
  • A clothing icon — police know what you're wearing, so changing clothes can throw them off.
  • A face icon — they know what you look like.
  • A two-character icon — both Jason and Lucia are wanted.

In one sequence, the pair torch their getaway car and switch to a van to cool down the heat and slip away incognito. It suggests evading police is now about actively covering your tracks, not just outrunning them until the stars blink out.

Jason & Lucia: switching and teamwork

Character switching works much like GTA 5 — a quick zoom out and back in, not quite instant even on modern hardware. But the emphasis here is teamwork: you'll switch between Jason and Lucia mid-mission depending on what the moment needs, and they pull off robberies together. The Extended Look opens with a job that goes wrong — a drug pickup that turns into a police raid and shootout — and the two play off each other throughout.

There's a nice storytelling wrinkle too: this is a Bonnie-and-Clyde tale, and Rockstar built the pair to be inseparable. They're the heart of the game, and the gameplay is clearly designed around their partnership.

The side activities are wild

This is where jaws dropped. In just 27 minutes, Rockstar showed a genuinely huge range of things to do around Leonida:

  • Fishing — confirmed at last, with Jason shown fishing alongside a buddy named Cal.
  • Basketball, working out at the gym, and even wrestling.
  • Scuba diving, base-jumping off skyscrapers, and jet skis.
  • Boating through swamps and kayaking across the state.
  • In-game social media — you can make things go viral, exactly as fans theorized from the first trailer.

The clear message: the world between missions is stuffed with stuff to do. This is Rockstar borrowing heavily from Red Dead Redemption 2's playbook of a living, breathing world.

Small details that impressed me

The little things are where Rockstar always shines, and this reveal was full of them:

  • If you spend days on the run from police, your character's appearance starts to show it — and characters need to sleep.
  • There's a split health bar and what looks like an honor/consequence system, where small choices can add up to bigger outcomes.
  • You can interact with NPCs in a detailed way, similar to Red Dead 2, and even grab food and drinks from fridges.
  • Multiple ways to break into cars — smash a window or use a slim jim, with more options as you progress.
  • Store owners can shoot back when you try to rob them, and security cameras can identify you.

When can you play it?

No change to the date: GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar still hasn't announced a PC version or given a date for it — if history repeats, a PC release is likely sometime after launch, but nothing is official. The Extended Look is positioned as the last major reveal before the game arrives.

If you haven't watched it yet, it's free on Rockstar's official YouTube channel and the GTA 6 website. It's worth the full 27 minutes.
